Historical Background

Torna Fort holds a special place in Maratha history as the first fort captured by the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the young age of 16. This pivotal conquest in 1646 laid the foundation for the Hindavi Swarajya, Shivaji’s vision of an independent Maratha kingdom. Standing tall at 1405 meters, it offers breathtaking views of the Sahyadri ranges.

The fort’s origins trace back to the 13th century, during the reign of the Shah dynasty. Later, it became a significant stronghold under the Adil Shahi dynasty before being seized by Shivaji Maharaj. After the Treaty of Purandar in 1665, the fort briefly fell under the control of the Mughals but was reclaimed by the Marathas in 1670. Over the centuries, Torna has witnessed battles, shifting allegiances and heroic tales that continue to captivate visitors.

How to Reach

Distance from Pune: 50 km

Travel time: 2 hours

Route: Pune → Nasrapur → Velhe → Base Village

Trek Route

The Velhe Village to Plateau

Trekk Distance: 1 km

Trekk Duration: 20 mins

The Trek to the Torna Fort begins from the Velhe Police station. The villagers believe that the Torna Fort is their guard that takes care of their security. The moment you start your Trek, you can see the magnificent Fort rising above the route and luring you to reach its pinnacle.

The beginning trail comprises a tar road until you come across a bridge. Post then starts the actual hike. A very straightforward hike doesn't mislead you anywhere. The whole beautiful trail up to the Plateau is marked well with signs and you can easily follow the direction without any guide. The whole trail is a mix of loose rocks and mud and thus can be slippery during the monsoon season. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes with great grip to have an injury-free trekking experience. You may also choose to carry trekking poles with you, such gears are helpful for trekking on such terrains.

This trail is full of Bristly Smithia flowers in the local language known as Mickey Mouse flowers. In about 15 minutes, you reach a plateau that connects you to the ridge.

Plateau to Torna Fort

Trek Distance: 2.4 km

Trek Duration: 2 hours 15 mins

The trail begins smoothly and soon becomes exciting with thick bushes and a small stream—make sure to cross it, not walk along it.

After crossing, you enter a dense forest of Karvi plants that continues for about an hour until you reach the ridge. From here, you can see the north face of Torna Fort, while the main entrance is still hidden.

The trek is of moderate difficulty, with a steep section ahead. Looking back at how far you’ve come boosts your confidence. The view of Gunjavane Dam signals that you’re halfway there.

After a short rest, an easier trail leads you closer to the top in about 30 minutes.

Next comes the toughest part—a steep rocky climb (60–70° incline). Climb carefully. Soon, you’ll reach rock-cut steps with railings (don’t rely on them fully as they are worn out).

After a short walk, you’ll spot the hidden Binni Darwaja. Passing through it, a scenic trail with flowers leads you to Kothi Darwaja.

Finally, you reach the top of Torna Fort. Take a moment to relax, explore the fort and enjoy its history and stunning views.

Final Climb

The fort has many interesting spots to explore. Along the trail, you’ll find a water tank (Khokad Taake) and a large area suitable for resting or shelter.

From here, the left trail takes you to Hanuman Buruj, Zunjar Machi and Dhaalkathi. The path is well connected and it takes about 30 minutes to cover this stretch.

From Dhaalkathi, take another left to reach Mengai Temple, Mahadev Temple and Konkan Darwaja, which further leads to Budhla Machi.

Exploring this entire section takes around 1.5 hours. The temple area is safe for overnight stays and camping, making it a good spot if you plan to stay on the fort.
