Hampta Pass Trek

- Hampta Pass Trek is a stunning crossover trek in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh that takes trekkers through two dramatically different landscapes, beginning in the lush green valleys of the Kullu region and ending in the stark, arid moonscape of the Lahaul Valley after crossing the Hampta Pass at 4,270 meters. This contrast between the two sides of the pass is one of the most striking geographical transitions available on any Himalayan trek, and the experience of crossing from one world to another in the space of a single day is one that leaves a deep and lasting impression on all who make the journey.
- The trek begins from Jobra, near Manali, and initially follows the Rani Nullah stream through a valley of spectacular beauty, with dense forests of oak, maple, and pine clothing the hillsides and the rushing stream providing a constant musical accompaniment to the walk. The wildflowers of the Kullu Valley are at their most spectacular in July and August, when the meadows above the forest zone are carpeted with hundreds of species of alpine plants in a display of color and form that has inspired artists and naturalists for generations. The richness and diversity of the flora on the Kullu side of the pass is a direct reflection of the relatively higher rainfall that the southwestern slopes receive during the monsoon season.
- The high camp at Shea Goru, situated at approximately 3,900 meters, is one of the most dramatically situated campsites on any Himalayan trek, offering views of the surrounding peaks and the glaciers that feed the streams of the Kullu Valley. The campsite is often surrounded by snow even in midsummer, and the temperature drops sharply after sunset, creating perfect conditions for stargazing in the clear mountain air. The sound of the wind through the tent fabric and the occasional distant rumble of a serac or rockfall contribute to the atmosphere of genuine mountain adventure.
- The crossing of the Hampta Pass is the defining moment of the trek, involving an early start from the high camp and a sustained climb through snow and ice to the pass crest. The transition from the green Kullu side to the brown and purple Lahaul side as one crosses the pass is one of the most dramatic geographical experiences in all of Himalayan trekking. The Lahaul Valley, revealed as one descends from the pass, is a world of extraordinary color and form, with the bare rock of the mountains displaying extraordinary geological diversity and the terraced fields of the remote Lahaul villages creating an almost surreal pattern of human occupation in this extreme environment.
- The descent to Chhatru and onward to Chandratal Lake is a journey through scenery of increasing grandeur, with the turquoise crescent of Chandratal appearing after a final descent as one of the most beautiful lakes in the Himalayan world. The Hampta Pass Trek is a classic for good reason: it packs an extraordinary diversity of scenery, experience, and adventure into a journey of five to six days that is accessible to reasonably fit trekkers with no prior high-altitude experience.
