Kalu Waterfall Camping

- Kalu Waterfall Camping is a delightful outdoor experience in the Bhimashankar region of the Pune district in Maharashtra, combining the natural beauty of a forest waterfall with the simple pleasures of camping under the stars in the Western Ghats. The Kalu Waterfall, a cascade of considerable beauty and impressive volume during the monsoon season, is situated in a forest setting of rich biodiversity that provides an ideal environment for those seeking a brief but genuine escape from the urban environment of Mumbai or Pune. The camping experience at Kalu is accessible to beginners and families while offering sufficient natural beauty and outdoor atmosphere to satisfy more experienced campers.
- The forest surrounding the Kalu Waterfall is a typical Western Ghats ecosystem of considerable ecological significance. The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, adjacent to the camping area, provides habitat for the Indian giant squirrel, one of the most spectacular and endangered rodents in the world, as well as numerous other endemic species of the Western Ghats. Bird watching at the campsite and in the surrounding forest is excellent, with the area supporting several species found only in the Western Ghats and many other commonly encountered forest birds that provide a constant soundtrack of natural sound.
- The camping experience at Kalu Waterfall is enhanced by the sound of the cascade, which serves as a constant natural accompaniment to all activities at the camp. The water, cool and clear from the forested catchment above, is refreshing for washing and adds an element of natural luxury to the camping experience. The waterfall itself is most dramatic during the monsoon season and immediately afterward, when the volume of water is at its peak and the forest around is at its most vivid and lush. The post-monsoon months offer drier camping conditions while retaining much of the beauty of the landscape.
- The campfire in the evening at Kalu Waterfall, surrounded by the forest sounds and lit by the glow of stars through the canopy above, is one of the most pleasant social experiences available in the Western Ghats camping circuit. The simplicity of the outdoor life, reduced to the basics of shelter, warmth, food, and natural beauty, creates a sense of perspective and contentment that is the particular gift of camping in the wilderness. The Kalu Waterfall Camping experience is an ideal introduction to outdoor living for urban dwellers who have not yet had the opportunity to experience the simple pleasures of sleeping under the open sky.
