Mahuli Fort Trek
Rs. 1500 per personBeyond Adventure
- Mahuli Fort Trek is a rewarding and historically significant trekking adventure in the Thane district of Maharashtra, leading to the highest peak in the Thane and Bhiwandi region at approximately 864 meters and offering magnificent views of the surrounding landscape, including the Ulhas River valley, the Titwala region, and on clear days, the distant shimmer of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Mahuli Fort, situated atop this commanding summit, is one of the most important hill forts in the northern Konkan region and played a significant role in the history of the Maratha Empire.
- The historical significance of Mahuli Fort is considerable. The fort was one of the border forts of the Maratha kingdom and was involved in several important military campaigns during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Maratha commander Peshwa Bajirao I is closely associated with the fort, which served as a strategic point in the defense of the northern approaches to the Maratha heartland. The surviving fortifications, including gates, bastions, and water cisterns, are well-preserved by Sahyadri standards and give a clear impression of the fort's original layout and defensive design.
- The trek to Mahuli Fort begins from Asangaon or from the village of Shilhonde, with the trail passing through forest and agricultural land before ascending steeply to the fort's entrance. The forest on the approach is home to a variety of bird species and the occasional glimpse of wildlife, making the walk rewarding beyond its purely physical dimensions. The final section of the ascent involves some rocky scrambling that adds a note of adventure to what is otherwise a straightforward forest trek.
- The view from the Mahuli summit is one of the finest available from any fort in the Thane district, with the Ulhas River Valley and its network of tributaries visible to the north and east, the Sahyadri ranges extending to the west, and the coastal lowlands visible on the clearest days. The summit area supports a small temple and the remains of the fort's fortifications, creating a setting that combines historical and natural grandeur in the characteristic manner of the Sahyadri hill forts. Mahuli is an excellent choice for trekkers based in Mumbai or Thane who seek a substantial trekking experience within easy reach of the city.
