Great Sahyadris Trail

- Great Sahyadris Trail is an ambitious long-distance trekking route that traverses the entire length of the Western Ghats through Maharashtra, covering some of the most dramatic and ecologically significant terrain in the Sahyadri mountain range over a period of many weeks. Inspired by the great long-distance trails of the world such as the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail, the Great Sahyadris Trail is an attempt to create a coherent, continuous trekking experience along the spine of the Western Ghats, connecting the fort sites, natural landmarks, wildlife sanctuaries, and cultural heritage of one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots.
- The Western Ghats, which form the backbone of peninsular India along a north-south axis, are recognized by UNESCO as a biodiversity hotspot of global significance, harboring an extraordinary concentration of endemic plant and animal species found nowhere else on earth. The range is also of immense cultural and historical importance, with hundreds of Maratha hill forts perched on its peaks and ridges, ancient trade routes crossing its passes, and communities of tribal peoples maintaining traditional lifestyles in its forests. The Great Sahyadris Trail aims to make this heritage accessible to trekkers while promoting conservation and sustainable tourism in the region.
- The route passes through several of Maharashtra's most important protected areas, including the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, traversing different vegetation types from the dry deciduous forest of the northern Sahyadri to the wet evergreen forest of the southern Ghats. The ecological diversity encountered along the trail is extraordinary, with the transition between different forest types providing habitat for a remarkable variety of wildlife.
- The cultural encounters available along the Great Sahyadris Trail are equally rich, with the trail passing through villages of the Warli, Mahadeo Koli, Thakkar, and Konkani communities whose traditional cultures are deeply intertwined with the forest landscape of the Western Ghats. The hill forts that punctuate the route, from Harishchandragad in the north to the forts of the Raigad and Sindhudurg districts in the south, tell the story of the Maratha Empire and the broader history of medieval Maharashtra in a setting of incomparable natural beauty. The Great Sahyadris Trail is both a physical adventure and a journey through the natural and cultural heritage of one of India's most remarkable regions.
