Matheran itself is famous for being the only automobile-free hill station in Asia, a distinction that preserves a pace of life and quality of natural environment that is increasingly rare in contemporary India, and the forest and viewpoints of this remarkable place offer a genuine escape from the urban pressures of the nearby city.
- Matheran, situated at approximately 800 meters elevation in the Sahyadri foothills, is accessed by the charming narrow-gauge Matheran Hill Railway from Neral, a journey of considerable scenic and historical interest that serves as a perfect prelude to the trekking adventure. The hill station is encircled by a network of paths and forest roads that connect dozens of viewpoints, each offering a different perspective on the surrounding landscape. The forest of Matheran is a diverse mix of tropical and subtropical species that supports a rich bird life, with over 150 species recorded in the area.
- Garbett Point, the highest point in the Matheran area at approximately 800 meters, offers a 360-degree panorama of extraordinary extent, with the Sahyadri range visible to the east, the coastal lowlands and the distant shimmer of the Arabian Sea visible to the west, and the rolling hills and valleys of the Western Ghats foothills extending to the north and south. The view is particularly magnificent during the post-monsoon season when the visibility is at its best and the landscape is still dressed in the vivid green of the recently ended rains.
- The trekking paths of Matheran pass through forest that is at its most spectacular during the monsoon season, when the trees are covered in ferns and mosses and the air is filled with the sound of dripping water and birdsong. The famous red mud paths of Matheran, distinctive in color due to the laterite soil of the area, create attractive trails through the forest that are pleasant to walk at any season. - Fitness: Good physical fitness is necessary. No severe medical conditions, infants and pregnant women must avoid .
Fitness Criteria
- A basic jogging requirement is the ability to maintain a light to moderate jog for 3–5 km without exhaustion, joint pain, or dizziness. The person should demonstrate controlled breathing and adequate stamina throughout the activity.
- A basic cycling fitness requirement includes maintaining a steady pace for moderate distances while showing good leg endurance and rapid recovery after stopping.
- The individual should be able to carry a backpack weighing approximately 20–25% of their body weight for 1–2 hours while walking, without experiencing shoulder strain, back pain, or imbalance.
- A BMI within the range of 18.5 to below 30 is typically required for trekking activities, with the expectation that individuals outside this range may face increased physical stress and may not be permitted on moderate to difficult treks.
