Bara Bhangal Trek
Rs. 35000 per personBeyond Adventure
- Bara Bhangal Trek is one of the most challenging and remote trekking adventures available in the Indian Himalaya, leading intrepid adventurers into the isolated high valley of Bara Bhangal in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh through a combination of high mountain passes and wild, unspoiled terrain that sees very few visitors each year. The village of Bara Bhangal itself, situated at approximately 2,200 meters in a remote valley accessible only by crossing high mountain passes, is home to a small community of Gaddi shepherds and farmers whose lifestyle has remained largely unchanged for centuries, providing a remarkable window into the traditional culture of the Himalayan foothills.
- The various approach routes to Bara Bhangal all involve crossing high mountain passes that test the fitness and determination of even experienced trekkers. The most commonly used approach crosses the Thamsar Pass at approximately 4,700 meters, a demanding high-altitude crossing through a landscape of glaciers, snowfields, and rocky mountain terrain that offers extraordinary views of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges. The sense of remoteness and wilderness on this crossing is profound; the land is uninhabited and the scale of the mountain landscape is overwhelming.
- The Bara Bhangal valley, when reached after the demanding approaches, reveals itself as a place of remarkable agricultural beauty, with the small village set amidst fields of barley, buckwheat, and potatoes that are cultivated at an altitude where most people would consider agriculture impossible. The community's self-sufficiency and adaptability in this extreme environment is a testament to human ingenuity and determination, and the warmth of the welcome offered to the rare visiting trekker is a deeply touching expression of the hospitality that characterizes mountain communities throughout the Himalayan world.
- The exit from Bara Bhangal involves crossing the Kali Hind or Thamsar passes in the other direction or continuing through to the Kullu Valley, with all options involving serious mountain terrain and significant physical demands. The Bara Bhangal Trek is not for the unprepared or the faint-hearted, but for those who commit to this extraordinary adventure, the rewards are commensurate with the effort: a genuine engagement with one of the last truly remote and unspoiled corners of the Indian Himalaya.
