Beas Kund Trek

- Beas Kund Trek is a magnificent high-altitude lake trek in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, leading adventurers through the spectacular Solang Valley to the glacial lake that serves as the source of the Beas River, one of the great rivers of the Punjab. The lake, known as Beas Kund, sits at an elevation of approximately 3,700 meters in a glacially carved bowl surrounded by magnificent peaks including Friendship Peak, Hanuman Tibba, and the Shitidhar range, creating a setting of extraordinary natural beauty and geological grandeur. The trek is accessible from Manali, making it one of the most convenient high-altitude destinations available to visitors to the Kullu Valley.
- The Solang Valley, through which the initial section of the Beas Kund approach passes, is one of the most popular destinations near Manali and is famous for its winter ski slopes and its summer views of snow-covered peaks. The trek quickly leaves the tourist infrastructure of the Solang Valley behind, however, ascending through alpine meadows and crossing glacial streams to reach the more remote terrain of the upper valley. The transition from the accessible lower valley to the wilderness of the upper approaches is one of the pleasures of this trek, with the landscape becoming progressively more dramatic and the sense of remoteness increasing with every hour of walking.
- The high camp before the lake, situated at approximately 3,500 meters, offers magnificent views of the surrounding peaks and provides an ideal base for the final push to Beas Kund itself. The meadows near the high camp are carpeted with alpine wildflowers during the summer months, creating a colorful foreground for the distant snow peaks, and the quality of the camping here is exceptional. The night sky above the high camp, away from the light pollution of Manali, reveals the Milky Way in all its grandeur, providing a reminder of the cosmic context in which these small human adventures take place.
- Beas Kund lake, when reached after the final section of moraine walking, is a place of stark and beautiful simplicity. The dark glacial water sits in a rock and ice basin directly below the glaciers from which the Beas River draws its source, and the silence of the location is broken only by the sound of meltwater trickling into the lake and the occasional rumble of distant ice movement. The knowledge that the water in this remote high-altitude lake will eventually flow through the plains of the Punjab, sustaining millions of people in its agricultural bounty, adds a dimension of geographical wonder to the experience of standing at its source.
