Kohoj Fort Night Trek
Rs. 1500 per personBeyond Adventure
- Kohoj Fort Night Trek is a thrilling nocturnal adventure in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, offering the unique experience of ascending an ancient hill fort in darkness to witness the extraordinary sunrise panorama that rewards those who make the effort of the early morning climb. The Kohoj Fort, situated at approximately 860 meters in the Sahyadri foothills near Wada, is a medieval fortification of considerable historical interest that commands magnificent views of the surrounding landscape, including the Vaitarna River valley, the Sahyadri ranges, and the distant coastal lowlands visible to the west.
- The night trek begins with a drive from Mumbai in the late hours of the night, arriving at the base village of Sakhare before the dawn. The ascent in the darkness, guided by headlamps through the forest and rocky terrain of the fort approach, creates an atmosphere of mystery and anticipation that is quite different from the experience of the same trail in daylight. The forest sounds of the night, including the calls of owls and the occasional alarm call of a bird disturbed by the passing trekkers, add to the sense of nocturnal adventure.
- The timing of the ascent is calculated to place trekkers at the fort's summit viewpoint just as the first light of dawn begins to appear on the eastern horizon. The gradual transition from darkness to dawn, experienced from the elevated viewpoint of the fort summit, is one of the most beautiful natural events available to the patient and dedicated trekker. The first grey light reveals the landscape in monochrome silhouette, with the forested ridges and distant peaks taking shape against a sky that progressively lightens from black to grey to gold as the sun approaches the horizon.
- The sunrise itself, when it finally appears, is a spectacle of brilliant color that illuminates the surrounding landscape in warm, glowing light and reveals the full extent of the panorama available from the Kohoj summit. The Vaitarna Valley below, the distant Sahyadri ranges, and the coastal landscape to the west all emerge from the darkness in a progression of increasing clarity that makes the sunrise experience a genuine revelation. The descent in the full morning light, after the exhilaration of the dawn experience, is a leisurely and pleasant return through the landscape now fully revealed, creating a satisfying conclusion to the nocturnal adventure.
