Mural Danda Trek

- Mural Danda Trek is a beautiful and relatively undiscovered trekking destination in the Kumaon Himalaya of Uttarakhand, offering adventurers a chance to experience the magnificent mountain landscapes of this region in a setting of considerable solitude and natural beauty. The trek leads through dense forest of oak and rhododendron to a high meadow known as Mural Danda, from which commanding views of the Kumaon Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Panchachuli, and numerous other summits, are available in conditions of extraordinary clarity. The relative obscurity of this trek means that it remains free of the crowds that affect some of the more famous destinations in the region.
- The approach to Mural Danda begins from the charming hill town of Munsiyari, itself a destination of considerable appeal with its views of the Panchachuli range and its status as the last significant town before the high Himalayan valleys of the Johar Valley and Milam Glacier. Munsiyari sits at approximately 2,200 meters and provides an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area, with the Nanda Devi Temple, the Maheshwari Kund lake, and the Tribal Heritage Museum all worthwhile additions to a visit before beginning the trek proper.
- The forest ascent from Munsiyari to the Mural Danda meadow passes through some of the finest temperate forest in the Kumaon Himalaya, with ancient oak and rhododendron trees of enormous girth creating an atmosphere of primeval wilderness. The rhododendron blooms in spring are spectacular, transforming the hillsides into a brilliant display of red and pink flowers that provides a stunning foreground for the snow-capped peaks visible above the treeline. The forest is rich in wildlife, with the Himalayan black bear, barking deer, and numerous species of birds including the koklass and cheer pheasant making their presence felt through sounds and occasional sightings.
- The Mural Danda meadow itself is a place of genuine Himalayan beauty, a rolling expanse of alpine grassland at approximately 3,500 meters that offers unobstructed views of the Panchachuli massif and the surrounding Kumaon peaks. The Panchachuli, five peaks whose summits are said to represent the five cooking fires of the Pandava brothers in the Mahabharata epic, is a particularly spectacular sight from Mural Danda, its multiple summits creating a complex and beautiful skyline that changes character with every shift of light and weather. The meadow is used as summer pasture by local shepherds, and the occasional presence of their flocks adds a pastoral dimension to the high-altitude scenery.
