- The Vasuki Tal Trek is a profound 6-day high-altitude odyssey that serves as a bridge between the mortal and the divine. Set in the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand, this journey leads trekkers to the Vasuki Tal glacial lake at 4,135 meters (13,566 feet). More than just a physical challenge, this trek is a spiritual tapestry woven with the legends of Lord Shiva and the mythic Serpent King, Vasuki. From the ancient, lamp-lit corridors of the Kedarnath Temple to the oxygen-thin ridges where the sacred Brahma Kamal blooms, this trek offers an experience of the Himalayas that is both terrifyingly beautiful and deeply sacred.
- The expedition commences at Gaurikund, a historic settlement perched on the banks of the roaring Mandakini River. For over a millennium, this has been the traditional base for the Kedarnath pilgrimage.
- The Scent of Sulphur: Gaurikund is famous for its sacred hot sulphur springs, where pilgrims perform ritual ablutions before beginning their ascent. The atmosphere is a sensory overload of chanting, the smell of incense, and the constant, powerful roar of the Mandakini as it carves its way through the granite valley.The Pilgrim’s Path: From here, the 19 km trail to Kedarnath begins. It is a path of "Devotional Grit," winding through dense Oak and Rhododendron forests. As you pass historic landmarks like Rambara and Garur Chatti, you are part of a human river—pilgrims, ascetics, and travelers all moving upward toward the seat of Lord Shiva.The Vasuki Tal region is a fragile high-altitude ecosystem, home to rare medicinal plants and endangered wildlife. Because it is far removed from the primary pilgrimage path, it remains a "Pristine High Sanctuary." For the trekker, this journey is transformative. It combines the intense community devotion of Kedarnath with the solitary, primal beauty of the high-altitude lake. You return from Vasuki Tal with the "Gaze of the Serpent"—a clarity of vision and a deep, lasting connection to the mythological heart of the Garhwal Himalayas.Upon reaching 3,584 meters, the forest gives way to a wide glacial basin dominated by the Kedarnath Temple.Architectural Antiquity: Believed to have been revitalized by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, the temple is an architectural marvel of massive gray stone slabs. Standing against the backdrop of the Kedarnath Massif, the temple feels like an immovable pillar of faith.
- The Evening Aarti: The true magic of Kedarnath is revealed at dusk. As the temple bells echo against the surrounding snow peaks and oil lamps illuminate the sanctum, a profound spiritual silence descends upon the valley. This is the first overnight halt, where the physical exhaustion of the 19 km climb is replaced by a deep sense of "Pauranic" peace.The second phase of the trek—the 8 km climb from Kedarnath to Vasuki Tal—is where the landscape transforms from a pilgrimage route into a raw, high-altitude wilderness.The Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary: As you follow the Vasuki Ganga stream, you enter a protected high-altitude biosphere. This is the domain of the Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, and the Bharal (Blue Sheep). Above, the sky is patrolled by the Golden Eagle and the Lammergeier, while the iridescent Himalayan Monal flashes through the shrubs.
- The Kingdom of the Brahma Kamal: In the summer months, the trail is a botanical wonderland. This is the primary habitat of the Brahma Kamal (Saussurea obvallata), the state flower of Uttarakhand. These sacred, pale-green blooms are found only at high altitudes and are considered the favorite flower of Lord Shiva, often seen in extraordinary abundance as you approach the lake.

Age Requirement :
- Minimum Age: 14 years and above
- Experience: Prior trekking experience in hilly or mountain terrain is recommended. The continuous ascent from Kedarnath to Vasuki Tal at 4,135 m requires reasonable physical fitness and altitude awareness. Experience on any Char Dham or Garhwal pilgrimage trail is beneficial. If participants have any medical condition, it is highly recommended to consult a doctor and inform us in advance so we can arrange logistics accordingly.
- Fitness: Pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure, cardiac issues, knee problems, or chronic respiratory disorders should be disclosed before joining. Participants with a history of altitude sickness should consult a doctor before booking. The trek reaches 4,135 m and is not suitable for those with serious unmanaged health conditions. The 2013 Kedarnath floods have altered sections of the route — all trekkers must follow guide instructions at all times.
Fitness Criteria
- The trekker should have sufficient stamina to cover 5 km by jogging in 35 minutes without stress.
- If the trekker wants to carry a backpack, he/she should be able to carry a 10–12 kg backpack.

Options to Reach
By Air: Nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED), Dehradun, well connected to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. From Jolly Grant Airport, hire a taxi to Rishikesh (approximately 20 km) and then drive to Gaurikund.
By Road: Gaurikund is accessible by road from Haridwar via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Agastmuni, Guptkashi, and Sonprayag. State buses and shared taxis ply regularly on this route in the trekking season.
By Train:
Haridwar Railway Station (HW) and Rishikesh Railway Station are the nearest railheads, well connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and all major cities. From Haridwar or Rishikesh, hire a private taxi to Gaurikund via Rudraprayag and Guptkashi (approximately 210 km, 7–8 hours).

Day 1
Haridwar / Rishikesh to Gaurikund
You will drive approximately 210 km (approximately 7–8 hours) from Haridwar or Rishikesh via Rudraprayag and Guptkashi to reach Gaurikund at an altitude of 1,982 m, trek briefing and overnight stay at Gaurikund.
Day 2
Gaurikund to Kedarnath
You will trek approximately 19 km (approximately 7–8 hours) from Gaurikund through Himalayan forests, past Rambara and Garur Chatti waterfalls to reach the sacred Kedarnath Temple at an altitude of 3,584 m, evening aarti darshan at Kedarnath Temple.
Day 3
Kedarnath to Vasuki Tal and Return to Kedarnath
You will trek approximately 16 km (approximately 6–7 hours) on a continuous ascent from Kedarnath through the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary to reach the sacred Vasuki Tal glacial lake at an altitude of 4,135 m (13,566 ft) and return to Kedarnath for overnight stay.
Day 4
Kedarnath to Gaurikund - Drive to Guptkashi
You will trek approximately 19 km (approximately 6–7 hours) descending from Kedarnath back to Gaurikund and drive approximately 30 km (approximately 1 hour) to Guptkashi for overnight stay.
Day 5
Guptkashi to Haridwar / Rishikesh
You will drive approximately 210 km (approximately 7–8 hours) from Guptkashi back to Haridwar or Rishikesh.
Day 6
Departure from Haridwar / Rishikesh
Transfer to Haridwar Railway Station or Rishikesh for departure, trek concludes with blessed memories of Kedarnath and the sacred Vasuki Tal.
