Rameswaram Yatra
Beyond Pilgrimage
- The Rameswaram Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in South India, taking devotees to the holy island of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, situated in the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka. Rameswaram is one of the four Char Dhams and is home to the magnificent Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is deeply associated with the Ramayana.
- According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ram worshipped Lord Shiva here to atone for the sin of killing Ravana (a Brahmin) and to seek his blessings before crossing the ocean to Lanka. The Ramanathaswamy Temple is famous for its extraordinary corridors — the longest temple corridors in Asia — stretching over 1,200 metres and lined with magnificent carved stone pillars. The temple also has 22 sacred theerthams (holy water wells) inside its premises, and bathing in all 22 theerthams is considered highly auspicious and purifying.
- The Agni Teertham, where pilgrims take a holy dip in the sea, the Dhanushkodi ruins, the Kothandaramaswamy Temple, and Adam's Bridge (Ram Setu) are other spiritually significant sites that make Rameswaram an extraordinary pilgrimage destination.
