Often referred to as the most scenic trail in the Everest vicinity, this journey is much more than a physical traverse through high-altitude terrain; it is a walk through ancient mythology, legendary Sherpa traditions, and some of the most spectacular alpine scenery in the Great Himalayan range. Standing at an elevation of five thousand three hundred fifty-seven meters at the summit of Gokyo Ri and surrounded by the giants of the world, the trail serves as a gateway to the sacred landscapes that have inspired mountaineers and spiritual seekers for centuries. It is a trek that offers a profound sense of solitude, spiritual energy, and a panoramic window into the snowy peaks of the north, providing a holistic escape from the modern world.

Region: Everest (Khumbu) Region, Solukhumbu District, Nepal.

Food: Nutritious teahouse meals (Sherpa Stew, Dal Bhat, Pasta).

Stay: Himalayan Teahouses/Lodges on a twin-sharing basis.

Age Requirement
Minimum Age Minimum 18 years
Experience Prior high-altitude trekking experience (above 4,000m) is highly recommended due to the strenuous nature of the climb.
Fitness Exceptional cardiovascular endurance and mental grit are essential for multiple days above 4,800m.
Fitness Criteria
1. The trekker should have sufficient stamina to cover 5 km of distance in 28 minutes or 10 km in 60 minutes.
3. Trekkers should be able to carry a 12-15 kg backpack; if offloading, a 5 kg daypack is required.
4. If a trekker's BMI is outside the range (18.5–29), a medical fitness certificate and coordinator consultation are mandatory.

Options to Reach

Flexible travel choices

International travelers fly into Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), Kathmandu.
Flight Option Title: 1. Flight to Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary Airport)

Flight Option: A 35-minute scenic flight from Kathmandu or Manthali. Note: Flights often shift to Manthali during peak seasons.
Road Option Title: 2. Drive to Phaplu and Trek

Road Option : A 10-12 hour jeep drive to Phaplu followed by 2-3 days of trekking to reach the main trail, avoiding the Lukla flight.

Kathmandu to Lukla: Approximately 138 km by air.

Journey Itinerary

Day 01
A scenic 35-minute flight followed by a 3-4 hour descent along the Dudh Kosi River to reach the first village.
Day 02
A challenging ascent through pine forests and over high suspension bridges to reach the Sherpa capital.
Day 03
Leave the main trail for a quiet climb through rhododendron forests with stunning views of Ama Dablam.
Day 04
A steady walk through high-altitude summer pastures, keeping a lookout for the legendary "Yeti" of local folklore.
Day 05
Enter the Gokyo Valley, passing the first two lakes to arrive at the beautiful lakeside village of Gokyo.
Day 06
An early morning climb to the summit for a panoramic view of Everest and Lhotse before exploring the fourth and fifth lakes.

  • Permits: Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit.
  • Staff: Government-licensed English-speaking Sherpa guide and porters (1 porter for 2 trekkers).
  • Safety: Pulse oximeters for oxygen monitoring and emergency medical kits.

  • Flights: International airfare and domestic Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu flights.
  • Insurance: Mandatory travel insurance covering emergency helicopter evacuation up to 6,000m.
  • Personal Expenses: Wi-Fi, battery charging, hot showers, and laundry in the mountains.
  • Tips: Gratuities for the trekking guide, porters, and kitchen staff.

Safety Note: Due to the extreme altitude and risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), this trek is not recommended for young children.

Requirement: Teenagers must show high physical fitness and prior experience in cold-weather trekking.
