Fitness Criteria
1. For basic fitness, a person should be able to jog continuously for 20–30 minutes at a steady pace without stopping, excessive breathlessness, or joint pain. Breathing should settle back to normal within a few minutes after stopping. This indicates adequate cardiovascular endurance and leg strength for general outdoor activities.
2. A person should be able to comfortably carry a backpack weighing about 20–25% of their body weight for 1–2 hours while walking without shoulder pain, back strain, or loss of balance. Proper posture should be maintained, and fatigue should remain manageable, indicating sufficient core and upper-body endurance.
3. A basic fitness level for cycling means being able to ride continuously for 30–60 minutes on flat to mildly uneven terrain without extreme exhaustion or knee pain. The rider should maintain a steady cadence and recover breathing within a few minutes after stopping, showing good lower-body endurance and cardio health.
4. BMI is used only as a rough screening tool for trekking fitness, not a strict rule. Individuals with a BMI between 18.5 and 29.9 are generally considered suitable if they also meet endurance and strength criteria. Higher BMI individuals may trek safely with proper conditioning, while very low or very high BMI can increase fatigue, injury, and health risks.
