The fort of Ratangad, situated near the popular Bhandardara region in the Ahmednagar district, rises to approximately 1,297 meters above sea level and commands magnificent views of the surrounding landscape, including the Bhandardara reservoir, the Sahyadri ranges, and on clear days, the distant silhouette of Kalsubai, Maharashtra's highest peak. The historical and scenic dimensions of this trek combine to create an experience that appeals equally to history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure seekers.
- The history of Ratangad Fort is as rich and dramatic as the landscape in which it is set. The fort, whose name translates roughly as ""fort of gems,"" was an important strategic outpost during the medieval period and changed hands multiple times between various regional powers. The surviving fortifications, including walls, bastions, and water cisterns carved into the rock, bear testament to the engineering skill and military resourcefulness of the fort's builders and defenders. Exploring these ruins while surrounded by the vast Sahyadri landscape creates a powerful sense of connection with the historical events that played out in these hills centuries ago.
- The trek to Ratangad typically begins from the village of Samrad, located near the Bhandardara Dam, which is itself a popular tourist destination famous for its spectacular overflow during the monsoon season. The trail from Samrad initially follows a relatively gentle gradient through forested terrain before steepening considerably as it approaches the fort walls. A distinctive feature of the Ratangad approach is the Nedhe, a natural rock arch or window carved by erosion through a rocky outcrop near the fort, which offers a dramatic framing of the sky and surrounding landscape and is a popular spot for photography.
- The monsoon season transforms the Ratangad region into a landscape of extraordinary beauty, with the entire hillside clothed in vivid green and numerous waterfalls cascading down the rocky faces of the Sahyadri. Participants should not have any serious medical conditions, such as hypertension or heart problems.
Fitness Criteria
1. The trekker should have sufficient stamina to cover 5 km of distance in 35 minutes without stress.
3. Trekkers should be able to carry an 8-10 kg backpack; if opting for off-loading, a 3 kg daypack is sufficient.
4. If a trekker's BMI is outside the normal range (18-29), please consult our Trek Coordinator before booking.
