- Roopkund Trek is one of the most mysterious and captivating trekking journeys in the Indian Himalayas, leading adventurers through the magnificent landscapes of the Garhwal Himalaya in Uttarakhand to a high-altitude glacial lake that holds one of the most intriguing secrets in the mountain world. Situated at an elevation of approximately 5,029 meters, Roopkund Lake is famously known as ""Skeleton Lake"" due to the hundreds of human skeletons that lie visible in and around its waters, a macabre discovery that has inspired decades of scientific investigation and countless legends and theories about the fate of the unfortunate souls whose remains rest at the lake's edge.
- The mystery of the Roopkund skeletons has been the subject of extensive scientific research, with DNA analysis revealing that the individuals died in multiple distinct events spanning several centuries, possibly as recently as the nineteenth century. The most widely accepted theory holds that at least some of the skeletons are the remains of pilgrims who were caught in a sudden and violent hailstorm while crossing the ridge above the lake and were killed instantly by hailstones of unusual size and ferocity. The scientific and historical puzzle posed by these remains adds an eerie and compelling dimension to what is already an extraordinarily beautiful and challenging trek.
- The trek to Roopkund typically begins from Lohajung or Didina in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand and passes through a series of environments of gradually increasing altitude and drama. The lower sections of the trail wind through dense oak and rhododendron forest, where monkeys chatter in the canopy and birds sing unseen in the undergrowth. As the trail gains elevation, the forest gives way to meadows of remarkable beauty, including the famous Bedni Bugyal and Ali Bugyal, which are among the largest and most beautiful high-altitude meadows in the Indian Himalayas.
- Bedni Bugyal, situated at around 3,354 meters, is a vast open meadow that serves as a major campsite on the Roopkund Trail. The meadow is framed by spectacular mountain views, with the peaks of the Trishul massif dominating the horizon, and in the morning light the combination of green grass, wildflowers, snow-capped peaks, and azure sky creates a scene of almost painterly perfection. Many trekkers consider the experience of camping at Bedni Bugyal to be among the highlights of the entire journey, and it is easy to understand why: the sense of space, silence, and natural grandeur is overwhelming.
- The final approach to Roopkund Lake involves crossing a high ridge and descending into the lake basin, a demanding section of the trek that requires steady nerves and sure footing on steep, potentially icy terrain. The lake itself, when it comes into view, is a deeply affecting sight. The dark water, surrounded by snow and rock, with the skeletons visible through the clear water and around the edges, creates an atmosphere that is simultaneously beautiful and unsettling. The surrounding peaks, including Trishul and Nanda Ghunti, provide a backdrop of tremendous grandeur. Standing at Roopkund, surrounded by these ancient remains and this magnificent landscape, a trekker feels the full force of the mountains' power and mystery.

Fitness Healthy individuals with a good level of physical fitness.
Participants with high blood pressure, heart problems, or other serious medical conditions should not participate in this trek. Pregnant women and people with mobility issues should also avoid this trek.
Fitness Criteria
1. The trek requires a minimum of 4-6 hours of walking and jogging per day
3. Participants must be able to carry a backpack weighing up to 10 kg.
4. If a trekker's BMI is outside the normal range (18-29), please consult our Trek Coordinator before booking.

The nearest rail head is Kathgodam, which is connected to major cities in India. From Kathgodam, take a taxi or bus to Lohajung, the starting point of the trek. Alternatively, participants can also fly to Jolly Grant airport near Dehradun and then take a taxi or bus to Lohajung.
